Current clinical and scientific studies are revealing that bicuspid aortic disease is not a simple valve condition. It increasingly appears to be a genetically-based connective tissue disorder, making it more complex, and more challenging to treat, than simple valve replacement. The investigators at BAVGenetics are dedicated to discovering the mechanisms of bicuspid aortic valve disease and why individual genetics seem to play such an important role in generation of this condition.

The need for funding

Many research efforts at academic medical centers rely heavily on funding from the National Institutes of Health. In this current economic climate however, funding from the NIH has been drastically reduced, leaving many clinical investigators searching for financial support to sustain their work. Increasingly we are looking to philanthropic investments from individuals and foundations who understand the crisis we are facing, and how critical this moment in scientific discovery is.

When you make a gift to support the BAVGenetics effort, you support more than just research. You support collaboration between investigators working at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Partners Center for Personalized Genetic Medicine and Harvard Medical School. You are investing in people who test ideas or refine techniques to find new ways to improve the practice of medicine. These people have devoted their lives to research and understand that their work will require passion, sacrifice, commitment, and risk. But the payoff is unparalleled—for they have the potential to transform human health.

What you can do

If you share our vision of the future of medicine, we encourage you to work with us to make it a reality. Brigham and Women’s Hospital provides ways for foundations, groups, and individuals to donate money to directly support BAVGenetics and its mission.
